Sharpening my small sebenza

I just bought a used small classic sebenza and was curious, would using a Lansky fine diamond rod be ok for touching up the edge on my small sebbie? I've heard that diamond stones remove a lot of metal and I certainly don't want to do that. OTOH I've heard they are good for touch ups. Any advice would be appreciated as I am basically clueless lol.

I'd say yes but sounds like you need to practice on a less expensive knife first. If your not sure how the fine diamond rod is going to act then practice and prove to yourself how it's going to perform. I just got a Wicked Edge and I had to practice with that before going on to my Sebenzas.

I have used a Lansky on my small regular Seb, but only use my Sharpmaker now. The used Seb I bought last week was brought up to scary sharp only with the Sharpmaker.

From the research I have done since acquiring the knife it sounds like I should invest in a sharpmaker. And until then, I'll definitely practice on my cheaper knives first. Thank you both very much for the help!

I have a Lansky with 'diamonds in the sky' like yours. I've stopped using it. It's a PITA for me to use compared to use compared to my

Sharpmaker. I get Much better results with the SM.

I must be doing something wrong...I've scratched the blade of a couple good knives with the Lansky.:eek:

Yea I'm really worried about over sharpening or screwing the edge up on a knife that expensive. So I think I'll just switch to another edc knife until I can get the sharpmaker

I've used a lansky diamond kit for a while now on my sebenza and it's produced some fantastic edges. The porcelain finish stone really brings it all together. It does take a while though.
Just did my large tanto 21 and xm 18 last night, followed by a course compound then ultra fine compound strop and the results were amazing. The sebenza edge I thinned and it'll shave your arm without touching skin.
But I know everyone has different techniques, and different things work for different people.

Don't forget you can send it to crk for free sharpening while you practice on other knives. I would not go near your sebenza until you feel really comfortable though.

Yes I plan on sending it in to get the spa treatment. Does anyone have an idea of what they would charge for that? Like new washers, titanium re bead blasted (I think that's what it's called) and new pivot and handle screws?

If you go to their website, click contact, then click from within or outside the USA, you'll see the price list and instructions on sending your knife in. Not sure if the numbers are up to date, but I hope that helps.

Pivot and handle screws are about $3 per set, I wouldn't spend the $ if your doesn't need them. The same goes for the washers. I've never had any replaced,
but I would guess somewhere in the $5 range each.

A round trip to the spa with insurance is going to be about $30. Blasting and sharpening is free.

It seems like the previous owner used the wrong sized hex bit on all the screws because they are in pretty rough shape. Otherwise it's in pretty darn good condition for being close to 10 years old. And I got it for an unbelievable price so I can't complain too much lol.

The knives will eventually dull after used. So, it better to learn sharpening you knives by yourself.

I use the Edge Pro Apex to sharpen my small sebenza. As the blade is quite small I need a riser block to make it easier sharpening without moving the blade. There are many videos as references how to sharpen the knives. As always, start learning with the cheap knives.

For touch up, the Sharpmaker is the best. I use the ultra fine stones to touch up.

Edge Pro Apex and Sharpmaker are the great companion. Happy sharpening brother...!

I found that I had to reprofile my 25 and my small before using on the sharp maker. From the factory the edge was more than 40 inclusive.
