Sharpening my small to 18 degrees

Has anyone tried sharpening their sebenza to an 18 degree or less angle? I'm wondering how S30VN will hold up with an HRc of only 58-59. My small is used exclusively for cutting through tape, paper, and string so I'm not putting alot of stress on the edge.... Any advice would be appreciated before I start grinding (Wicked Edge).

On a related note, I'm wondering what setting people are using to sharpen their small sebenzas on the DMT aligner.

That is the angle I am using on my small stropped to a polish, with a 13 degree micro bevel that is not as polished. It is used for similar tasks, I love it to be as sharp as possible. I use wicked edge and it has worked quite well.

With the media you're talking about you'll be fine down to 15, or even a little less.
I like 15 on some folders, and up to 20 on others.

Awesome feedback guys. Exactly what I needed! Will hit the WEPS tonight!!!!!

I freehand sharpen. Barely lift the shoulder of the hollow grind from the stone and sharpen. I have been putting a 15 degree micro bevel on it for the past few months. No issues that I can recall.

I put on a 16 deg. edge with a 17 deg. microbevel on my large 21 ...couldn't ask for a better slicer! Whittles hair eaisly too.

I did not put a microbevel on at 18 degrees . Does anyone think it's necessary?

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't worry about it.

With my own knives I enjoy trying to get a more and more acute angle for each time I reprofile, it will become apparent when failure occurs and alls you have to do is increase the angle slightly, but this way you'll always know how low you can go and get the optimal performance out of the knife. I think most people would be very surprised what some of the modern steels can handle. I'm eager to see how my 3V custom I have on order will perform in the thin edge area. Would love to get my hands on M390/M4 or some such in a folder!

I will try. I don't have a super macro lens though so I'm not sure what will show...

I took my Umnumzaan down to a 10 degree per side (20 inclusive) bevel, with a ~15 degree or so (~30 inclusive) microbevel. It's held up fine for cutting thick cardboard, the thicker metal foil from wine bottles, and a little wood carving.

Here's a picture:

It was done partially freehand and partially on an Edge Pro. Primarily a succession of diamond stones up through the coarse/fine/ultrafine Spyderco stones and I ended on a 1 micron diamond paste strop.

The bevel is ~10 a side (20 inclusive) and the microbevel is ~30 inclusive. I freehanded the microbevel completely, but I've gotten pretty good at keeping a consistent angle.

Think I will do a bevel like this for my small seb once I grow a pair...

Most my sujihikis have a very wide bevel since I only cut boneless raw fish at work, maybe a sushi roll.

I add microbevel so edge stays sharp for longer durations.

I honestly think sebenzas only need a microbevel if you cut hard stuff and a lot of it. Someone like me with many stones and daily sharpenings, microbevel isn't really needed.
