I just did my first sharpen ever on my Tenacious, it's sharp, and I did an ok job. I would love however, to meet someone in the Seattle area who has experience with sharpening to perhaps give me some pointers or possibly show me how to improve on my sharpening skills. I used the Spyderco Sharpmaker for putting the edge on my Tenacious.

You're using the right tool to get good results.

There are two videos on YouTube that helped me using the SharpMaker.

If you google Spyderco SharpMaker Improvements (two videos by Crocket) you'll find them.

Good luck and I'm sure you can get better with practice.

Dark helmet, I'm a Washingtonian as well, and am also learning the sharpening game. I'm by no means an expert-I'm just getting to be decent myself, but I would be totally willing to share the limited knowledge I have! Shoot me an email at olybears57@gmail.com if you'd like. I'll be working in the Renton area the next three days.

Thanks will do. I got a bit overzealous with it and kinda screwed up a bit. It's sharp but the edge looks crappy and I might need to have it reprofiled. Took another knife I had to a Knife shop in Kirkland after stone washing it and the guy who sharpened it buffed the lower part of the blade. I thought about sending this knife to them to reprofile it but am a bit leery after the last job.

For some reason I get the same results with the sharp maker. I ended up getting annoyed and learned how to free hand.
It didnt take too long. I would buy a practice knife, watch some youtube videos, and take your time with it.
I dont think theres anything else quite like free hand sharpening. I used to run around afraid to use up the factory edge but now I usually scoff at the factory edges!

I may do that or just take it to a sharpener and just learn to maintain it with the Sharpmaker. I had to sharpen this knife because I stonewashed it and now after spending a ton of time with it last night, the edge, though sharp, is now rounded.
