Sharpening of Manix S110V

I have tried to sharpen my Manix 2 LW S110V freehand with water stones for past few weeks. I got nice burrs with coarse stones up to #1,000. But when it comes to polish the edge with Shapton stones up to #8,000, I don't get any burrs, and the edge still feels like just off the #1,000 stone. The scratches made by the #1,000 stone stay on the edge no matter how many passes I make on finer stones. I was able to sharpen my Stretch 2 ZDP-189 with the same stone series, but they may not be good enough for S110V.

So I decided to purchase Edge Pro Apex, rather than investing more on different types of stones, since it seems praised here as a good sharpening system. I just got it today and tried to sharpen Manix.

It took a while (30 min) to reprofile the semi-convex bevel made by my freehand sharpening with #120. But after that, it was like a breeze to go through stones and up to polish tapes. The edge is now polished and as sharp as my other knives.

But I would still like to have stones for my freehand sharpening, as it is a bit difficult to sharpen the tip with Apex for me ATM. I would appreciate it if you can recommend good stones for S110V or a tip to sharpen the tip of a knife with Apex.

Cheers,

Miso

The reason you couldnt refine s110v with a 8k grit Alox stone is because the vanadium carbides are way harder than Alox itself and also because the abrasive size is smaller or equal to the carbides themself resulting in carbide tearout and thus a crappy edge.
Only diamonds and CBN are able to cut through and polish them unless you just ignore them with a larger abrasive and work on the matrix as a whole, settling for a toothy edge.

Hi Threethreethree,

Thanks for the clarification. I thought that might be the case.
I see that diamond stones are quite expensive in my area.
I guess I will live with EPA for a while and learn how to sharpen the tip (and the base as well) effectively.

I read about peoples who supercharge japanese waterstones ( natural or synthetics ) with CBN or diamond suspension to expand their scope of use and cut carbides with great success.
I never tried myself though.

Yeah, I've heard about that, too. I will look into that option.
Thanks,

Miso
