Hey Guys,

I just got a sharpmaker kit on saturday but my question is how much pressure do I apply when sharpening ? Is there a difference in pressure needed on the medium and fine stones ?

I believe you are supposed to decrease pressure gradually as you go. I try to use very light strokes on my fine and ultrafine stones.

Thanx Zenghost,

I just tried sharpening with very light strokes on the medium and then fine stones. I got my POS Herbertz in 420 steel to shave in a matter of minutes ! The sharpmaker is great !

the most you should need is about 2kg. I use just the weight of the blade alone for the final strokes, and have them in the base(I do better work freehand). vast majority of my work is done about 1kg of pressure, then gradually lightening to but a few grams of added weight in addition to the weight of the blade.

It depends on the blade and the edge geometry. Something soft with a very thin and acute edge like an Opinel needs very light pressure, if you have a custom in D2 at 62 RC with a thick and obtuse bevel it will not sharpen using the same force.

You need enough force so that the rods can actually cut into the steel, but not so much force that it bends the edge. You can tell when you are using too much because the edge will burr very heavily. You can tell when you are using too little because nothing will be happening.

Thanx guys,

I practiced a bit on my soft 420's and it's going really well a bit more practice and I'll actually be ready for the stuff higher on the C scale :)
