Sharpening progression on ZT 0566- could someone give me an opinion on this progression?

I'm giving an old buddy a ZT 0566CF and want to put a nice edge on it. It's S35VN.
I don't think it's been sharpened, looks like factory edge to me. I think ZT puts between an 18 and 22 degree factory edge. I'll test it out with a marker once I get it on the TSPROF.

I think I am going to take it down to 15 degrees per side.

Here is my plan. Below is a list of stones I have with me right now.

1. Setting new angle:

CBN 60 315/250 (F60, J50)
CBN 120 100/80 (F120, J120)
CBN 240 50/40 (F240)

2. Sharpening
  • Updated Venev bonded ocb 400
  • Updated Venev bonded ocb 800
  • King Hyper 1000
3. Polishing
*Suehiro New Cerax 3000
*Suehiro New Cerax 6000

4. Final polish/strop
  • Suehiro G8 finishing stone 8000 (GC)
  • ?? possibleSigma Power 'Select II' 10000 and Suehiro Gokumyo 20,000 ??
  • Strop diamond paste increased 5/3µ 20,000 ct wood
  • Strop diamond paste increased 3/2µ 10,000 ct leather
  • Strop diamond paste increased .25µ 10,000 ct leather
  • dry strop leather cordovan (a few alternating light passes on each side)

Thanks to anyone willing to take a minute to check my plan.

These are the stones I have on hand:
  • TSPROF silicon carbide 120
  • TSPROF 220
  • TSPROF 400
  • TSPROF 600

  • CBN 240 50/40 (F240)
  • CBN 400 20/14 (F400, J800)
  • CBN 800 7/5 (F800, J2000)

Also have the stones the TSPROF came with - I think they are aluminum oxide- if anyone thinks that's a better way to set the edge or swap in a 600 in the mix.

Maybe it'd be more productive to ask someone with similar stones what progression they use?

I usually do something similar to this minus the high end stuff and skipping the coarsest, with a bigger jump here and there.
This one is for one of my oldest buddies who is just starting to get into knives and I want to send a perfect edge to him.

Coarse diamond, extra fine diamond, spyderco medium and fine. Just stopping with the diamond stone produces a very nice, sharp, toothy edge.

On a more serious note I recently started using a lansky diamond system, I go up to fine then put a micro bevel on using my angled rod set or the fine ceramic stone, works pretty good but still newer to sharpening S30V and up. I plan on getting a kme or edge pro later this year with diamond sets.

I personally wouldn’t take a ZT down below 20 per side.

I can get a very nice edge with my sharpmaker using a diamond-medium-fine-ultra fine-strop w/green compound combo.

The key to any of it is patience. Take it slow, hit the entire edge, use clean stones, keep them oiled.

You feel the blade is too thick behind the edge to go much lower? It's going to be a user for sure, my buddy is on set 12 hours at a clip hauling around 50 pound cameras, I imagine a lot of zip ties, cordage, tape, etc. I want to him to be able to push cut, but maybe I'll scale it back a few degrees. I think ZT goes a minimum 18 degrees, but that might be on a 450 or something.
Appreciate the replies.

A knife is a poor tool for cutting zip ties.

My 566 is 15 dps, and you can go lower if you want but you don't need to. ZT and Kershaw are really inconsistent with their blade bevels, and 18-22 is just what they recommend. I've had very good, low angle edges from them, and ridiculously high angles too. Just reprofile to 15 dps and it will be fine.

And as greatscoot said, knives are not good for cutting zip ties. In a pinch they work, but if you're going to be cutting a lot go buy some channelock diagonal cutting pliers. Inexpensive, high quality, and made for things like cutting wire and zip ties.

It came out awesome. 120-20,000. Yes, I know that's excessive, but this is for someone that's a really close friend of 30+ years who is just getting into knives. I wanted to make it perfect. I have video ... I'll put it up eventually and like here.
