Just bought a BM mini griptilian with 440c steel from a local knife shop. right at the tip ther was a significant ding in the blade so the store manager marked it down to 28 bucks. I got the ding out with some 100 grit sand paper on a mouse pad. It now looks pretty good but Ive been sharpening it on grey corners for about 45 minutes now and about a quarter inch of the tip will not get sharp. The rest of the blade shaves. Any suggestions? By the way I cant freehand for the life of me. Thanks for bearing with me.

My guess would be that you didn't remove enough metal with the sandpaper to get close to the edge where the ding was. Trying to do any amount of serious edge changes with the deramic rods is going to take forever. Go back to the sandpaper and work until you feel a bur on one side, the do the same on the other. Now go back to the ceramic rods, should work fine.

Ya, try just freehand with the sand paper or a stone just to get some kind of edge. Try to work both sides evenly, then when you get an edge that can be shape-able/sharpen able, then try the Sharpmaker. Also try using finer grit paper.

I think the flats will be more effective if you're just concentrating on 1/4 inch at the tip.

Good luck.

I bet that it is just too thick at the tip. Try magic markering the edge near the tip and use that as a guide to make sure you are thinnign it out. You should be removing the black at the "top" of the endge, but not at the very edge, if that makes sense! Keep on sharpening until all of the black is removed (having removed steel right to the very edge). Then switch to some 220 or 320 grit paper to clean things up a bit. That should help.

I find that a lot of production knives get thicker at the tips, and your knife also had a ding to be removed. So, the 2 combined probably means you just need to thin things out a bit. A properly thinned blade should take only a few swipes to set a micro bevel on with a sharpmaker.
