What is the knife attachment called that holds your knife at the correct angle so you can free hand sharpen when you are just starting out? I saw a video of it but I could not find out the name of the clip, it clips onto the back of the blade, then you put the blade on the stone and it will automatically hold it at the correct angle for sharpening your knife free hand with the whetstone, thanks!

It makes sharpening free hand a little bit easier if you have no clue what you are doing and just are starting out, it makes it impossible to sharpen the knife at the wrong angle and helps you focus just on your method of sharpening, I wish I could explain it better.

He is asking the name.

The few I know of are the Lanksky Sharpening System, Edge Pro Apex and the Wicked Edge.

But aren't those systems? I'm talking more of a clip on accessory, but you would still be using a whetstone, and not a sharpening system.

You mean something like this?

It sounds like OP is talking about that^ or an even simpler wedge that the knife rests on to maintain a consistent angle on the stone.

I think they're called "angle guides" in English. They usually sell them in shops that sell kitchen knives.

The DMT guide that Singularity35 posted is used by several here, and probably the most versatile.

There's also clamps like the Razor Edge Systems clamp...

If you search "knife sharpening angle guide" and look at images, I think you'll see a few examples of what you're looking for.

Buck used to sell one like the Razor Edge Clamp, but it had a thumb wheel instead of Allen screws.

I've never seen them available for purchase individually, you usually get the "angle guide" aka a small angled piece of plastic, with something like the Smiths Arkansas stone sharpening kit.

The DMT aligner is a more modern aid that can be useful in learning to freehand though it does stay attached to the blade.

Hi OP,

Just to let you know, many of us started freehand sharpening with no guides... as people have done for millennia. To be honest, I can't even imagine what it would have been like, trying to learn freehand sharpening with a big clunky thing attached to the back of the blade. It seems weird to think about, but maybe it is useful.
