Hi all, newbie from the UK here.

Do I need any particular type of stone for sharpening a carbon blade Mora heavy duty? Or can I simply use a standard whetstone?

I like the knife, despite its budget price tag and dnt want to scuff it up.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

One of the best things about a carbon Mora is that it's not persnickety about sharpening media. Most anything with a good flat surface will work fine. In fact, a cheap SiC stone, like the Norton Economy, is probably one of the most practical choices for that blade. I've sharpened them on those, water stones, and diamonds, and sandpaper. They all work, albeit with slightly different edge finishes. Use whatever you've got and don't sweat it.

I don't know what you consider a "standard whetstone" but the Mora HD can be sharpened on pretty much any sharpening stone.

I've sharpened Moras dull to hair shaving on river stones before. That's the nice thing about carbon steel easy to sharpen.

Thanks for the brilliant replys folks. I might get a slightly better whetstone, the one I have coat £2 from China and is slightly too abrasive I think. Works fine on an old Whitby folder though.

If you're thinking about spending a bit more on a sharpening stone and if you want a portable one, consider the Fallkniven DC4. It's a compact and high quality stone with diamond on one side and a nice aggressive ceramic on the other. In a way it's almost overkill for a simple carbon steel blade (so go lightly) but should serve you very well for many many years of sharpening on the go.

Edit: it is a field sharpener though and is aimed at utility. You probably won't be achieving a mirror finish with one.
