I got the urge again - time for a new knife. I've got the hots for a BM 710 McHenry & Williams but I have a big concern. What kind of problems does that complex curve on the blade cause when it comes time to sharpen? I can't sharpen a knife free-hand to save my life. I use a Lanskey. Any advice?

yep, get a Sharpmaker. And you never know but free-hand sharpening might just save you life yet.

I have the Lansky System and the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

The problem with the Lansky System is the edge taper varies along the blade. That's not really a big deal, but it's irritating and setup is time-consuming.

Precise edge-angles are a snap with the Sharpmaker, requiring only that you discipline yourself to maintain the blade vertically as you sharpen.

You can sharpen most of the 710 blade (the most useful parts) on a regular flat stone. A narrow rod will work better for the entire inward curve ("recurve"); you should be able to accomplish similar results with the Lansky. Do you have the triangular cross-section serration sharpening attachment that I believe is available for the Lansky? That's what I'd use if I didn't have a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

If you like the 710, don't let the recurve deter you. It's not that hard to sharpen.
