This is not really a knife question, please bear with me. Now that I can run my grinder a slower speeds, I tried sharpening a wood chisel on it today. I did it by holding the chisel on it's side, on the tool rest at first ,so that the cutting edge is parallel to the the direction the belt is running. I can really see the angle of the grind well this way. It worked great, comes out razor sharp if I want it. That's the problem, it worked so well I'm afraid I 'm doing something wrong. I used to do them on stones until you get a burr then doing the flat side. I'm not getting burr running the cutting edge parallel to the belt. I remember reading somewhere somebody expressed some concerns about sharpening knives parallel to the cutting edge.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks and regards, Greg

Then you grind with the edge of blade parallel to the belt rotation as you have discribed. If the chisel is held steady there will be little or no wire edge. but you should still strop it to remove the grind lines left by the abrasive belt

sometimes you get an invisable wire edge. It will shave like a razor, but the firt time it tutches a piece of hardwood it's dull because the edge breaks off. The trick is to get an edge that will last all day. a little time on the strop wont hurt anything and is a good insurance policy.
