I am using a worksharp precision adjust pro to get my parent-in-laws kitchen knives somewhat sharp again.

Question: how to I repoint their already rounded tip?

Subquestion: how do I avoid rounding a pointy tip when sharpening?

Thanks!

Work carefully, move the stone perpendicular to the edge grind, and don't overshoot the tip by much more than about 1/4 of the width of the stone. Going too far can make the stone twist into the tip, thats what rounds it off. You need to make sure it stays flat right to the end to re-establish a sharp pointy tip.

Super helpful thank you!!

When you say don't overshoot it by more than a ¼, do you mean that no more than a ¼ of the stone should be not touching the edge?

Like this?

Yes ... meaning to stop with the blade tip still centered or better on the stone. If you run the tip close to the edge or off off the stone is when you can get the tip rounding.

Yes, stop before the stone can twist over onto the point.
Sharpen in the direction indicated by the yellow arrows, keep the stone flat.....

Getting here late, but I’ve had tips that for whatever reason just would not hold a point. I accomplished it by taking a few strokes off the end of the spine, and blending it into the spine farther back. I could tell where it was, but most people couldn’t (‘course, I didn’t show it around to any BF knife knuts…)
