Hey,
New to the forum, first post, bear with me. I have been trying to freehand sharpen for what seems like eons without a lot of success. I purchased a meyersco sharpen-it and that is what I have been using ever since. What do you think about these sharpeners. I'm already cringing at your response. I just purchased a DMT fine diamond stone, the one like a butterfly knife with the two folding handles (red). The best luck I have had with this stone is to lightly move the blade across the stone as though I am going to carve a piece of the stone off. Anybody else do this? Circular motion and holding the correct angle just seems beyond me. Thanks in advance

Yes, once again the never ending question gets posted "Sharpening?"
:)

Thinking back now, that's how I found bladeforums.com myself. I was searching for the answers to the questions I had about how to get the worlds sharpest edge on my knives.

Well after much reading, asking and more searching I'm still looking for the magical answers.

I like using the DMT hones and the razor edge guides, see the links below.

I have also used belt sanders with special leather belts, special razor edge hones made out of some super secret material and a number of other items.

For me what works best is the DMT hones with the razor edge guides and a smooth steel.

After using what works best for me I can get a damn nice edge, but I still can not do what I have seen John do on the razor edge video.

If you watch the razor edge video you will see him shave his face with a hunting knife

How he does it I don't know. I think he is leaving a little something out when he tells use how he sharpens a knife :)

BTW: welcome to the forum, there are many great members here.

try it without the circlar motion. That never works well for me, I think it is to hard to keep the angle that way. Also try doing one side until you get a burr, or use a marker on the knife edge and see if you are sharpening the very edge or not.

Whatever method you use, be sure to color the edge of your knife with a sharpie marker, then make a few passes. This will tell you loads of info about how correct (or incorrect) your angle is. Be sure to check out the Sharpening FAQ in the FAQ section on this site. It is by reading Joe Talmadge's FAQ that I really learned how to sharpen freehand.

BTW, welcome to the forums

Mike
