Sharpening Question?

I like the looks of Emerson knives but have yet to buy one because of the "chisel" grind/edge. Is there any way to sharpen these knives in a true conventional V-edge or will this somehow mess up the blade geometry of the knife? If I knew I could use a lansky kit or a sharpmaker to put a conventional edge on an Emerson I'd buy one in a minute. Any input appreciated :)

Sure you can put a conventional grind on one. I did it with my Commander a while back using a belt grinder. You could use a Lansky system but it would take a while, or a Shrapmaker with diamond rods but that would take a lifetime. Bottom line is that it is possible, but would take a long time by hand. Your best bet would probably be an extra corse diamond bench stone leaned up against a Sharpmaker as an angle guide.

Remember that this will only be possible with models that are conventional grind, with a chisel edge. Also remember that you will still need to grind both sides of the edge again to your new angle. I did it at 20 degrees and it worked out fine, not removing to much steel and producing a nice edge.

So it wouldn't be possible to do it on a Chisel ground (tanto) blade but no prob on a spearpoint. I'm running out of excuses for not owning a CQC-7 ;)

You wouldn't be able to re-profile a cqc-7 becasue it is a true chisel grind, unlike the commander which is a modified chisel. The modified actually starts to come in towards the edge on both sides, where as the cqc-7 is completely flat on one side. Hope this helps.

The Emerson Mini, Standard, and Super CQC-7 B's are a true chisel with the right side of the blade flat as is the SOCFK -B.

Commanders, CQC-8, 10, 11, 13, and Persian are modified chisel grinds which as noted by ErikD can be ground to a conventional V with some work. I don't know about the spear point CQC-7's and other models.

I should note that my new CQC-13 looks easiest of all to reprofile to a true V and is an outstanding design. You wouldn't go wrong with this as your first Emerson. Best site to get one I know of is TAD Gear where they are under $ 160 shipped.
