Sharpening Question...

I have a Masters of Defence CQDmk2 plain blade and a CRKT KISS plain blade.
I just bought a Gatco sharpening set but I am not quite sure what angle to use for these 2 knives.
Anyone have this info?

The KISS is chisel ground. SOO much easier to do free hand. Basically, you sharpen only the beveled side (which is steeper than a comparable v ground knife) and you gently kiss of the burr on the flat side

nothing specific, I carry them for personal defence, although its unlikely that I will ever have to use them for that.

In that case you are probably best off in simply matching the existing bevel as it will allow them to be kept sharp with the minimal amount of work. Just take a marker and trace out the edge and then try some of the angle settings until you get one which comes close to taking off the full marker stripe along the edge.

Sharpened a KISS for a friend and the existing bevel is WAY steep. Had a lansky setup at the time and the angle was off the scale for that system. Benchstones may be the way to go.

Start with 25-if that's not sharp enough go to 22-if still not sharp enough go to 19. I have the same system and tend to use either 22 or 19.
Unsolicited hot sharpening tips:
When you've completed your sharpening, take a TINY bit Flitz polish on a cu-tip and run it along the sharp edge of the blade. Then take a peice of thin leather or oil skin and then pininching it between your thunb and forefinger polish the edge..If it's perfect then stop. Ifit's not perfect than take it anougher level.. Repeat the flitz polish and this time use a dense cloth and try to see where this blade is working and were it's not. Don't be afraid to use some fine (600)sandpaper and then follow up with the honing stone.

If you want to keep your knives as clean and sharp as possible, You might get a box cutter and use that to do things like open boxes.
Hope this was of some little use.

Don't do this on a chisel grind.... better to follow the advice of others and match the grind. The Gatco/Lansky style sharpeners aren't really designed to sharpen a chisel ground knife. If you think about it... a knife ground on both sides (for example 20 deg on each side) is a 40 deg edge. On a chisel ground knife... that 40 deg is all on one side.

I agree with Cliff on this one. (Imagine that!) The easiest way would be to follow the original bevel as best you can.

Gatco uses a jig and the jig has 6 options:
11
15
19
22
25
29
In my experience with pocket knives, the best angles are 25-22 or 19. If I were attempting to sharpen an unknown knife I'd start with 25 then 22 then 19 and stop when I found the correct angle. :)
