Sharpening Question

What's the difference between sharpening in a forward motion like Sal does on the Sharpmaker DVD and sharpening in a backwards motion like stropping? No real reason for the question except curiosity.

You pull back generally because if you pushed forward the edge would cut through the media. The main effect is an influence on burr formation. Honing edge into tends to minimize burrs.
