Sharpening, questions of a newbie

Hi,

I recently purchased a small Gerber sharpening "stick" which chewed up blades. Bad choice. I have a Gerber multi-tool, a Gerber folding knife, a Leatherman skeletool, and a few dozen pocket knives as well as some Glock fixed blade knives and so forth. :)

So, I bought a Smith's kit, specifically this one: http://smithsedge.com/products/product.asp?id=32&cid=21

I used it, with the 20deg blade angle, and sharpened a couple of my knives. It made a huge difference. I used the triangular blade on my serrated knives, but I had to use the 25deg. angle on most of those, or it seemed to be abrading the flat part of the knives, and not the serrated edges.

That said, while much sharper than before, I read that the 'honing' stone included, is only 1000grit. From what I read on here, some people are using 8000 grit+ for final touchups.

So, my question(s) is/are - what am I doing wrong, what am I doing right, and what else should I do? :p Most of my blades are the half serrated, half flat variety. They've always seemed to work best for me, since I do a fair amount of ripping as well as a fair amount of fine cutting. That said, I've gotten tired of replacing knives that dull, instead of just sharpening them.

Thank you for all your advice/help,
David

You should be able to get your knives shaving sharp on your stones. The 8000 grit stones are overkill for most people. Use a Magic Marker on your edge to make sure you are consistently abrading in the right place. Practice.

Great idea with the sharpie. I'm sure a lot of my issues are related to my inability. :)

I have almost the same system, as long as you fallow the directions you should be able to get any quality knife shaving sharp. I use a scrap peace of leather glued it to a cigar box and loaded up the leather with a medium buffing compound I bought at lowes for my final finish, but only on my SAK's, on larger more hard use knives the fine diamond stone is plenty.
