Sharpening Rabbit Hole Indeed

Hi
New to the forum and relatively new to knives, about 3 years for what I'd call decent knives. I have a KME but 777 Edge 777 Edge posted about a Gritomatic sale, and my wife's car was paid off that week. Danger Danger Danger. I ended up buying a Hapstone RS2 black. I ordered the Chosera 5 stone set but due to my OCD I have been reading a lot in this forum and have come to think that may not have been the best choice for steels like S45 VN, S110 and SV30, so I ordered a set of Venev Centaur Series. From what I read diamonds will do everything I need and augmented with some strops (and a crapload of time actually sharpening) I should be good.

Here is my question, did I mention I am OCD, I have come to learn that buy once cry once really suits me. Should I go with the diamond matrix stones vs the Venev stones, or better said if I keep this up will I want to upgrade to something else in a year or so? I know I can't know the future but I'd prefer to do it as right as I can now. Cost matters but performance matters more to me. What complement of stones and strops would a serious sharpener using a Hapstone R2 have on hand.

I know I will want to sharpen something when it arrives next week so I plan on using the KME diamonds and strops till I stop playing the buy send back game with Gritomatic, and I'm certain they don't wan to play that game either. Will the KME stones work with the Hapstone? One more question there are a boatload of videos on using the KME, Hapstone not so much, are there a few definitive things I should see so I don't wreck too many knives?

Time traveler? I freehand sharpen, so can't help you much, but welcome to the forums!

Any of the standard 1x6 or 1x4 inch stones with angled ends will work with the Hapstone R2. But one point I have not seen mentioned is that Hapstone stone holders are made for stones about 8mm thick. Thicker stones should be fine, but thinner stones can cause the stone holder to hit the clamps if the blade is narrow or the angle you set is narrow. For example, the TSProf stones are thin and can have problems on the Hapstone. I do not know offhand how thick the other stones you mentioned are.

You might also want to consider whether stones need to be used with water or require maintenance.
