I have top quality wet stones, but I have read that these steels don't work well on these types of stones. I use a good technique to sharpen my knives, but before I try to restore the edge on these I would like to make sure that I have the proper equipment. Do any of you have experience with sharpening these steels, and if so what system do you use? Thanks for any advice. I am use to high carbon steels and can get a great edge, however I don't want to wreck a 200.00 knife. Thanks guys

if your technique is solid, you can't wreak your super steel knives on stones it will just take longer depending on what stones are used.

just use some Norton crystolon. cheap and effective with the super steel.

Ok. I have king wet stones. From 250 to 4000 grit. I have just been hesitant to use them on my ZT or my benchmades.

I used a Norton 220 and King 10v waterstone for shaping on S30V and 20CV. Once the edge matches the angle you use, what you have should be OK. I finish on a Sharpmaker at a slightly higher angle. I have had issues with the King 4k stone. It takes some practice to get really sharp edges. If you're a good with it then you shouldn't have trouble. How sharp are you looking to go?

Seems to be a very good source of information. According to that, I should be able to use my kings stones. Does that sound correct?

Usually, I just so to the point of shaving, but I am considering going as sharp of an edge I can get for my every day carry.

I use Congress MoldMaster silicon carbide stones..just as Jim Ankerson recommends. I use the 400 and 600 grit. Ankerson uses the 320 and 400, I believe, on EVERY steel that he tests. However, Ankerson likes the 400 grit edge in order to have the sharp little edges on the apex, rather than polishing the edge to a higher luster. So, in addition, for MY carry, I also use a 1K and a 4K Shapton stone on my Apex Edge Pro.

kings are good value stones but are not very efficient stones for those steels,

I wouldn't be hesitant to sharpen my knives with them if that is all I had.

Just do it and go from there.

I can get hair whittling results with CTS 204 and S30V with my sharpmaker and extra fine stones, great for maintenance

I appreciate all the advice, guys. I think I can use my kings and include a leather strop for a finisher.

It will be a real struggle with the King stones. King stones are quality but not intended to work with high alloy steels. Even high quality waterstones are not the best with high alloy steels and for this reason I use diamond stones on any steel with more than 4% Vanadium.

Yeah. I'm probably going to have to suck it up and get a good set of diamonds and possibly ceramics. Any Suggestions?

DMT Coarse and a strop with 1 micron diamond paste. It's the most common way I sharpen high alloy steels and IMO provides one of the best edges for such steels.

Thanks for that. I spent last night reading up on different systems, and DMT came up again and again. I think with that along with your advice I have made up my mind. Thanks again!
