I have a bm rukus that I can take a few swipes on my sharpmaker and have it popping hairs and it is s30v, however I have several other knives such as a spartan blades ares that is also s30v and the sharpmaker won't hardly dent it as far as edge goes... why is this?

Do the angles match up? Take a sharpie and paint the edge. Then run the knife on the sharpener a couple of strokes. Look to see if you are actually sharpening the edge or the shoulder. What kind of sharpening system?

Every maker does a different HT, try some kershaw S30V its hard as rocks too.

I believe it also depends on the process used by the maker for the hardening, which differs across brands/makers, and also on the actual rockwell number. I may be wrong, since I am no expert, and my knowledge is from reading posts on this forum -- so take it with a pinch of salt.

I would try what Socom Elite said. Not hitting the edge is a common problem with the Sharpmaker. The bevel might be a higher angle than the Sharpmaker. If you mark it with a Sharpie, look at it after each pass. If you make several swipes, you might wipe the Sharpie off, but you're not actually hitting the edge with each stroke. Even better, look at it under magnification.

S30V can be pretty hard. I found that DMT stones seem to work well, but I decided that I was going to convex my Bradley S30V Mayhem blade with sandpaper/mousepad and it took FOREVER! ....real pain in the arss.

Also it doesn't seem to polish up as shiny as most other steels. But once you do get it sharp it will hold its edge extremely well!

S30V is a real pain in the a**. For as much, and how I use my folders with this steel, I wish they were 154CM. I think it's very good and IMO easier to sharpen with my SharpMaker.

This is why I love my Rift.
