Hello all,

I went out and bought myself a sharpmaker today and have been practicing on an old knife. I felt comfortable using it so I moved to my new 25. I have an issue though. I used the sharpie method and set the sharpmaker to 40 degrees. I held the 25 completely straight as the sharpmaker video shows. Doing this made the knife sharp but all of the sharpie did not come off. Its as if the 25 has a micro bevel. Is this normal? Also, how are you suppose to sharpen the last half inch from the tip? It seems as though I have to kind of tilt the knife as I end the stroke. Is this right?

Thanks for the help guys.

If the apex is black and the shoulders have "polished" off the magic marker you'll have to get either sandpaper or the diamond rods from spyderco to reprofile your edge.
I invested in the diamond rods several years ago and glad I did.
I hoped this helps
When I say sandpaper I meant to tape it to your rods to help remove metal more aggressively, you will lose the convex edge but they never did anything spectacular for me anyway

yes, its normal, all the sharpie doesn't have to come off,
so long as sharpie at the apex comes off the knife will get sharp
its the apex that does the cuttiing

yes, you have to keep the edge at 90 degrees to the stone,
so you have to rotate your hand down as you reach the curved tip
otherwise you're not touching the apex to the stone
so it will take longer to sharpen that part
and eventually will round the tip of the knife

you can see this if you cut some cardboard, the tip cuts better if you rotate your hand down

It sounds like the edge needs to be reprofiled before you can use the Sharpmaker as intended.
Not really a big deal if you have the the tools for it, but it's something they should have done at the factory.
Especially since CRK recommends the Sharpmaker.
