Hi BF friends,

Long story short: went to a restaurant, dented dull house knife could not cut properly my food, used my EDC that happened to be my Seb 25 and BANG, hits on the plate flattened the edge.

Tried to sharpen it with the KME, sandpaper/mousepad: nothing happened. A bit of a resukt with a whetstone but the knife is not able to cut anything at all.
I have now a perfect, shiny, totally dull bevel. I understand the concept of convex bevel, but I don't get any result.

I don't want to send it to CRK, as I want to learn how to maintain this knife.

Any tip is welcome :)

Mark the edge with a Sharpie, and see where you're removing metal from.

Sorry to hear that man! The sharpening principles don't change... Learn what a burr is and grind until you get a burr the full length of both sides, then refine it with higher grit stones a little bit.

Even if you try the sharpie trick it may not work if your bevel apex is rounded... Turn your knife over with the edge facing the sun and see if you can get any light to glint off of it. If so you have not ground it enough.

Hope this helps.

Still gotta know where you're hittin'.... :)

Absolutely, I use the sharpie all the time to figure out where I'm at, I just wanted to point out that sometimes even if you remove all the sharpie you may not be hitting the apex if the apex of the bevel is flat across ;) It is a very useful trick for sure, thanks for pointing that out.

The first sharpening is the worst, because you usually need to grind down the shoulders. I paint with sharpie and then use a cheap 40x microscope to make sure I'm getting the grind right to the edge. It can take longer than you think, even with diamonds, that first time.

Thanks guys. Used a magic marker (the ones used to draw on glass) after a while because it was more visible.
Now, I have it hair popping sharp :)
