do you really need to sharpen the serrated part of your knife, if so how do you do it? i have a nice old knife with a handle that is the shape, and made out of, a horn. it is a beautiful knife but i cant get the serrated edge to be sharp as it was. this is buggin me.

There are a couple ways to go about it. Most would recommend using one of the cone shaped files in diamond or ceramic from DMT [image 1 and 2] or the ProFile from Spyderco, available in 4 and 8 inch models. They come in sets with both fine and coarse.

You can also do limited "lapping" of the back of the serration, but this will eventually "disolve" the serration all together.

The DMT files go for around $18.00

The Spyderco goes for $18/$28 for the 4" and 8"

Also consider the $30 Spyderco Ceramic File set with 5-6 4" assorted shaped pieces
