How do you guys sharpen serrated knives, esp. spyderco? I don't have access to the spyderco sharpening equipment. any suggestions?

Where are you? You can get a sharpmaker for around 50-60 bones. You can also send them back to Spyderco to have them resharpened.

I'm in Florida. I have the ceramic set from spyderco since the early eighties, but I could never figure out how to use it. and it is doing me a lot of good in my parents' house out of state.

If you need to save money you can try Wet-or-Dry (silicon carbide abrasive) Paper. Bring your knife to a hardware store, home improvement store, or hobby shop that sells small diameter rods or straight tubing. Find the rod/tube that is slightly undersized fit to your serations. Also buy some 180 grit and 600 grit silicon carbide paper. Bend the paper around the rod with the abrasive side facing out. Matching the sharpening angle on the beveled side of your blade sand down the depressions in the blade. Start with the 180 grit and finish with the 600 grit. If you get real ambitious you could go to an auto parts store and get some 1500 grit paper to finish the job. After you rework the primary beveled side of the blade do a few light strokes at about a 15 degree angle on the other side of the edge to remove burrs.

I agree with one2gofst, the Spydie Sharpmaker doesn't cause too much of a dent on your bank account and it is the best sharpener to use on the Spyderedge, in my opinion. ;)

Lansky also makes a series of ceramic pocket hones specifically designed for various types of serrations, such as Spyderco, Cold Steel or whatever.

and get a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204mf, you won't regret it, well worth the money. It comes with an instructional video and after little practice you can get a nasty sharp edge on anything that's supposed to have one. The best system out there IMO. Happy shopping :)
