Sharpening Service for Convex Edge

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to find a reputable firm offering sharpening services or someone trustworthy to teach me how to put a convex edge on a Kukhuri.

I'm in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but do not have a belt grinder or the facilities to buy or install one. So this oft cited tool is not a possibility for me at the moment.

If I could find a firm or someone to put the convex edge on my 3 Khukuris and show me how to maintain them with a conventional stone I could make it work. Unfortunately everyone in my family who knew how to really sharpen a knife has passed away.

The only thing I can think of is the House of Blades up on Loop 820. I know at one time they offered sharpening services.

Thoughts?

I know 11 guys from last Saturday that are pretty darn good at it. (that's 12 minus me :) ) Maybe one of them would volunteer services for ya.

You can do it yourself. Just use a strop with wet dry sandpaper on top of it or a some sort of foam that has some "give" in it with wet dry sandpaper on top. Depending on how dull it is I usually start out with 3 or 400 grit and work up to 600 or 1500.

Lay the knife fairly flat on the strop foam, you know kind of look and see where the edge and the sandpaper meet up. You don't have to be perfect because if you use something that has some give it will bend around the blade and meet up with the edge.

Do one edge, then the other drawing the knife away, the opposite of like if you were cutting with it.

If you put a convex edge on it I'm not sure you could touch it up with a stone. I touch mine up with the strop or strop and 600 grit.

I think Dan or Yvsa could give you better instructions than I could but there's my best effort in case nobody else replies ;)

You can maintain a convex edge on a stone, but it's more difficult to do it properly/consistently that way. By far, the easiest way is with either a ceramic rod, or sandpaper (on a padded strop). If you're nice...;)...you might be able to talk Warren into sending you materials/instructions on making a strop of your own.

I could put the edges on for you, but live too far away to provide hands-on instruction. You did just miss a weekend chock full of this very thing. There's always next year, right? :D
