Hey all, I am wondering if anyone is from the Chattanooga, TN area that would know of a good local place that does axe sharpening, I have a wetterlings large felling axe that I have a decent edge on but I want it shaving sharp! and i have not been able to accomplish that with a bastard file and up to 220 grit sand paper...Ive looked around and the only thing that i could find were places that sharpen lawn mower blades or salon scissors and electric clippers! any help would be appreciated! thanks!

No, I don't know of place near you.

However, you can ask any maker or member on this forum and they will gladly
do it for you. Usually for free. Oh, the beauty of this forum.

Personally, I would ask Scott Gossman. find him in the makers forum.

Have you tried using higher grit sand paper? Some people go all the way up to 2000.

thanks for the replies!, walmart only had up to 220; i guess i can get higher grits at lowes maybe?...also was thinking of getting the lansky "puck" do you think that would put a razor edge on it or would i still need to follow it up with a higher grit sandpaper?

Take it by RMJ Tactical - either John H. or myself can get her sharp for you.
Address:
100 Cherokee Blvd. Suite 117. This is at the corner of Manufacturers road and Cherokee.
Check the website for the phone number and let them know you are dropping by: www.rmjtactical.com
Thanks,
Ryan

Anything with a finer grit will get you a finer edge. Not sure what grits the lansky is but if it's something like medium to fine it should do the trick. Depends on how far you want to go. I personally stop around 1000 grit. And the only place I can find high grits like that is auto parts stores.

Can't beat that offer  Very nice of you guys!

Nice Hawks too

I'd say you need at least 400grit plus stropping to produce an edge capable of shaving arm hair... It's doable with lower grit, but it takes a lot more effort.

You can generally find an assorted pack of wet & dry containing sheets of 220, 400, 800 and 1000 at just about any auto parts store...

mxdw88, if you want to learn how to do it on your own i'll be glad to help you out. email me your phone number and i'll talk you through it. just get some wetordry sandpaper in 220-380 and 400 grit and a phone book.
