Sharpening should have its own thread

I come in this section to see what cool things people are doing to knives and its all about sharpening

Sharpening DOES have its own thread(s)... lots of them! :p

I don't think they need a separate sub-forum. Sharpening, to the degree that a lot of us talk about, pretty much amounts to tinkering. Outside of that it's maintenance.

And I agree, it's one of the most fun aspects of owning a knife. Gets even better once you start buying knives with sharpening in mind. You start to really admire a $12 Opinel, rather than a $400 1/4" thick pry bar, although those can certainly be fun too, and have their place.

What it really boils down to is scrolling a little to get to the next thread. No big deal. ;)

Shepard, I know Exactly what your saying. Plus, it's much the same question over and over. If they would merely search and read it's likely already been discussed. Yet, embellishments aren't discussed here much as well. It is what we have. DM

Well you can't force more embellishment (though we could try :) ),but the redundancy is a bit much, I agree.

That's the nature of forums though. At least it's been that way for the 15 years I've been on them. I cannot imagine how mind numbing it must be to be a long term mod... my hat's off to them though!

I think embellishment toes the line with tinkering. Guys will tinker around with making custom scales for their knives, then when they have the experience to offer attractive embellishment they suddenly start posting in "services offered" :( to get myself through these tough times, I like to think of sharpening as embellishing the edge with a beautiful new bevel ;)

I agree with the OP. I posted a question in this section last night about enhancing the grip on Kershaw Ken Onion designs which do not have scales but have one piece aluminum or stainless steel combined frame and grips. No answers yet. Most sharpening is maintenance IMO and there seems to be little discussion of other tinkering and embellishment.

It's mostly about sharpening. I agree that it's important. And obviously it should be important enough to have its own forum on the forums if its page after page of the same question over and over and over again. Make some stickys on how to sharpen. Things like that

There are several stickies on several aspects of sharpening. Very good ones at that. But that's not going to stop the more redundant questions, such as the ones popping up more recently. There are also a lot of posts about sharpening because a lot of people here are extremely interested in that aspect of knife care. More so than in the tinkering aspect. Separating sharpening into it's own section may help the new users sort through it better, but it won't make more people post about tinkering and embellishment. As it is, a lot of that stuff is split between here and the makers forums. It may help if you separate maintenance and tinkering, maybe put tinkering under the maker's section. That might at least make it so you are asking a group of people more specifically interested in those questions.

I got to go with the op on this.
I saw the heading of this thread skipped over it and the next couple pages of threads were nothing but sharpening. So I felt I should come back and post.
Sharpening is maintenance, kind of a default if you have a knife.
Tinkering and embelishments are additional.

It's just cumbersome to wade thru trying to check out the tinkering and embelishment part.

I would love to see a sharpening sub-forum. I doubt that I am alone in my tastes here, but I have little to no interest in tinkering or embellishment. Maintenance and sharpening are my primary interest.

It sounds like a win win for all if it was seperated into its own sub forum. Guys that are looking to sharpen will have all kinds of uninterrupted talks and tinkering and embellishing guys don't have to shift thru dozens and dozens of sharpening posts :)

Well I, for one, would be bummed. My interest is a split.

Sharpening has definitely been the most popular topic over the last couple of weeks, but it's not always like this.

I realize that I have started a few threads regarding sharpening lately, but I'm already trying to roll new questions into my old threads.

Give it a little time and it'll swing back and forth. I know that I've posted, and responded to many threads about modifying my knives. Hell, I mod almost every knife I buy.

Id agree. im new to the forum and when I was looking on new(just got a Ritter Mini Grip) sharpening ideas(never sharpened sv30 B4) I really could not figure out what heading to look under to find out how to sharpen better/correctly OR what to use...A sub forum just labeled Sharpening would have stuck out...Maintenance,Tinkering and Embellishment just didnt sound like where I should be looking(but was :) )
