I have been looking around for a simple steel honing rod, and I have been unable to find one. they all have the diamond coatings and stuff, but all i want is something to straighten out the edge rather than remove metal. can i use just any piece of thin steel, such as a screwdriver or something, or would that damage my blade? Also if anybody knows where i can find one online that would help me out as well.

Flaws in anything other than a well made steel will end up damaging your edge...

Well made steels can be had for just a few dollars.

Any number of sources , any restaurent supply , kitchen supply. They are made by most of the kitchen knife makers such as Henkels or commercial maker like Dexter Russell. Try www.cooking.com

Lee Vallley Tools offers an oval burnishing rod (designed to make a burr on scrapers) that makes a perfect smooth steel... it's very hard, R65+, about a foot long, and not at all expensive (especially with the Canadian peso). LVT mails. Check out their catalogue in the woodworking section.

Check garage, house, and estate sales. Steels from old carving sets are common for $1.00 or less. Good hunting.

Look for the Razor Edge Folding Steel - it is smooth and you can set the angle so you do the job properly I wouldn't use anything else as I have had mine for a number of years and it has never let me down. Of course you can always make your own out of a "rat-tail" file - lot of hard work though.

get the folding steel, which is the best steel on the market. The rods are super smooth, and you have angle control! If you have a Sharpmaker, you can even put the rods in the fishhook grooves and steel at a sharpmaker preset angle.
