Would like input on where to get a good sharpening steel (at least 12 inches long - 15 would be great!). I'm looking for a medium grain (have a fine grain already) regular steel to do (beginning) work on hunting and fishing knives. I don't really care for the diamond steels much.

Recommendations?

Thanks.

are into the diamond steels. They recommended that I come here and ask for help.

I recommend Ultimate Edge diamond rod.It cost a little more than DMT or E-Z Lap but I think its worth it.Its cats eye oval shape sharpens serrated ans straight edges.

A fellow forumite here at BF owns a culinary supply called Urban Chef Outfitters. I've been checking out his site lately, and there's lot's of nice goodies there.

I just roughly counted the steels offered on his website. I came up with about 49 different steels. Look in the sections for both Messermeister and Forschner knives. Each has a sub-section for steels.

Robb...where can I purchase that Ultimate Edge Steel? Does it come with a smooth finish? Thanks!

Also look at the selections @ www.cutlery.com This company was tiny just a few years ago and has grown quite considerably. They stock high quality only and are very good people to deal with.

If you are now considering diamond steels, the Hewlett Jewelstik has three abrasive surfaces from coarse to fine. Comes with a Lansky adapter too. They used to sell them at www.cabelas.com They last just about forever.
