I was reading another thread about sharpening stones, and it got me wondering about mine. Last fall, I bought at an estate auction a set of three stones. Now, I know next to nothing about the business, but these seemed pretty good, plus, I knew about the previous owner and he had always used quality parts. Anyways, I was wondering what others thought about the stones I bought. The faded print on the side of each stone is "Fine India Oilstone FB8" "Made in U.S.A." and "by VORTON", but I could be wrong about the vorton. The ink is pretty faded so I'm not 100%. So what can you guys tell me about them? I do know it puts a nice working edge on my knives.

And before someone asks, yes, I always use oil with these.

these are norton abrasives an american standard for many years. you will want to clean them with comet occasionally. unless you get into the newer super alloys these will certainly be adequent for most jobs.

The gray stones are Silicon carbide, and the yellow stone is Aluminum oxide. They will sharpen anything except ceramic blades.

Almost forgot. You can get honing oil from a butcher supply store or use USP mineral oil from the pharmacy.
