Sharpening Stone & Nuclear Contamination

Ummm, got a quick question. Just took a second to read the cute little pamphlet that comes with the USGI M9 bayonet and on the first page it has the following paragraph:

In the event of Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) contamination, remove the sharpening stone and discard it prior to implementing decontamination procedures. Removal at any other time is not authorized

Can anyone in the Military or other please explain the reasoning behind this paragraph to me?

There is an approved method for decontaminating military equipment that has been exposed to NBC contaminants. This method involves a very strong solution and high pressure wash. Since the stone is very porous, there is no way it can be washed clean of NBC contaminants. It will therefore be a danger to anyone who carries it after exposure to these contaminants and must therefore be replaced with a new one.

Think of the stone as a sponge. When you wash your car you get lots of soap in it. If you try to rinse the soap out of the sponge, even with a high pressure hose....you will still have reminant soap in the sponge due to all the lobules of sponge. A sharpening stone is just like this.

Don't worry though, I don't think anyone would survive a CBR (Chemical, Biological, Radiological) attack anyhow so it really doesn't matter if your stone is in the sheath.

I remember doing those drills for hours in a gas mask......

In the event of the attack being only nuclear in nature you could have the stone placed in a "Waste Currie Monitor". This will determine if the stone is contaminated. If it isnt you could still use it if you wanted to, that is if you survive the 250 rem casualty dose you undoubtably received during the fall out phase of the detonation.

Ahhh!, at 250 REM you will not be able to worry about getting your stone dirty

Leave it to the military to make a note like that!

250 rem is fatal, thats all it takes to kill a human ? Damn !!!

Oh there are many other interesting and oddly amusing notes and directions in the pamphlet.

Since all these knives are given to trained soldiers, you woudln't think it important to remind them that the knife is sharp. However that is the first line on every single fricking page, even if they had to break-up a paragraph

WARNING
The blade of the bayonet is sharp, use it with care and caution.

I would imagine that if a soldier actually cut himself, he would keep his mouth shut

lol

They also go on and on for two pages giving instructions on what to do if any part of the bayonet system were to fail visual and functional inspection. One thing you would notice that damn well deserves a "DUH !!"

Every single course of action for anything that fails is:

Turn in to unit armorer.

Wouldn't it have been more cost effective to simply say "If it ain't workin' GET ANOTHER ONE !!"

Nuclear??.......And the military is worried about decontamination of your sharpening stone?!?!? Damn, they can have it to do with whatever they want!! I just want my skin and tendones back!! Thank you very much!!

Then there's the Biological & Chemical Warfare.
If this mess is tossed onto my a** the last thing I'm going to be worried about is my stone??
However, I may worry a little for my knives though.

This thread sure does bring me right back to my military days alright!!

You know, this has got me to wondering a bit. While of course for decades the AEC stoutly denied any such thing, there was apparently an ongoing problem with leaks of radioactive material from the Hanford nuclear plant.

Do you suppose anyone is gullible enough to think that radioactive rocks downstream from Hanford would carry the power to realign the molecules in steel into positions where they were far stronger and tougher than after forging, hot rolling, etc.? If we could find some smooth ones, could make a fortune sellign them for sharpening and realigning knife blades.

Geez. Should have kept quiet about this. Could have finally been rich. But, its so far over to the Tri-Cities. Oh well, if anyone gets rich off this, please remember where you heard it.

Bugs,

That's great. If you take enough of a dose you will just glow in the dark, and the radiation and glow will make it easier for a rescue team to find what's left of you.

You know Bugs,
Maybe you should pass this one on to Jerry Busse for review. It sounds like a very marketable product for Busse Knives.
