Sharpening Stones Recommendation

Hey all. The little freehand sharpening I attempted just ended up rounding off my knives to an unusable dullness. I want to give it a shot again because I feel that is a crucial section of knife collecting. I was using some really cheap double sided stone that was long and not very wide. So I need some general tips as well as I would like some ideas on good stones to buy.
thanks
Steeley

go get some 3m brand wetordry sandpaper and a piece of glass. you can get good results without spending a bunch of money on stones. i need to give you a call when you get ready to sharpen some knives and see if we can find out what you are doing wrong.

or you could make a road trip down this way and i'll teach you how to sharpen. :D

Get one spyderco ultra fine rod. This thing will put amazing edges on knives, and it is great for keeping them laser sharp.

For reprofiling and intermediate stones a dmt set will get you very far. Dmt aligner kit works well as a guided system and free hand.
