I am new to this forum and I am sure this has been discussed before, but, I have not been able to find any threads.

I would like to try freehand sharpening using stones basically for pocket knives and utility knives. My questions are:

1. What would you recommend for me to start off with:

a. a set of three Arkansas stones - medium, fine and ultra fine
b. a set of Japanese water stones
c. combination of both? other suggestions?

2. Where is the best place (reliable and resonably priced) to get the stones?

3. Is there a video that teaches how to sharpen knives with a stone?

Thanks for the help

Rick

Grab the Razor's Edge guide to sharpening. Their thoughts about oil is controversial, but everything else is down and to the point.

Grab a Norton Medium and Fine India stones and you'll be on your way as a beginner.
