so im headed out of the country for 8 months and im gonna be somewhere that ill have to sharpen my knives myself so ive got to take a relatively portable sharpening system with me. actually it doesnt have to be a "system" per-se but just something that allows me to do it myself. this is available on massdrop and im wondering what you guys think about it? im new to knives and even more so ways to sharpen them. Ive seen the spyderco system, it looked good: portable, idiot-proof (that parts REALLY important), and seems to do a good job, especially for the price. So far it seems to be down to these 2 options but just wanna know what everyone thinks. any and all suggestions and opinions are welcome. pictures or links are more than i need but would really helpful...

In my experience and traveling for work a diamond stone that you can use either dry or with water is a better option. For around $45 will also be far more versatile on a variety of steel.

Here is a video I made a few years ago.

from what I can see that looks like a tri stone system. If you have never sharpened "free hand" before there is a learning curve and will take some practice before getting good results. Th e Spyderco Sharpmaker is a good system to touch up your edges. If you are using some kind of "super steel" you will need to purchase the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker in addition to the basic Sharpmaker kit. Give the Washboard sharpening system a look. There is still a learning curve with the Washboard but less so than with basic stones. The Washboard is also very versatile as far as what steels you can sharpen and the size of cutting tools.

I say get you some DMT diafolds in the black, blue, red, green. Awesome diamonds, sharpen on the fly and two diafolds won't take up any space!

Get a Worksharp Guided Sharpening System.

You don't have to use the guides

It's diamond and ceramic

Cuts steel way faster and is more compact.

How much are you willing to spend?

Under $200: KME Sharpening System
Under $100: Spyderco Sharpmaker with diamond rods
Under $50: Image brand sharpening system. It's an edge pro knockoff that can be found on amazon as well as the bay. Also seen under the GoPlus brand.

The worksharp powered system would actually be what I'd take, but you MUST practice with it before you go. Don't just take it into the field and expect to be able to use it. You must also keep in mind that it's electric and will need a power source. Those mentioned above are all manual.

This is exactly what I would have said. ^ Although the EdgePro (and like) are a little bulkier than many others. You could also throw in a Spyderco Doublestuff. Easily fits in any pocket when out and about.
