Recommendation? Sharpening System and Strop Recommendations

So about to buy my "first" knife. I say "first" as this will be the first one to arrive as I have one in S35VN on order that I've been waiting on a while and will probably be waiting a few months more yet.

I live in Florida so I'll probably be going 440C or similar on my everyday beater knife, don't know yet. Anyways I'm going to need a good strop and sharpening system.

I don't have much as far as specialty stores where I live; nothing knife specific that I can find. I do however have a couple fabric stores and even a Tandy Leather relatively close by so I was thinking of perhaps going to Tandy and getting some scraps to make a strop or two. I've read vegetable tanned is best as chemical tanned strips the silica out.

I've also read good things about Balsa but I have even less of an idea where to start.

So if I go the scrap route, what should I look for in the leather as far as qualities go? If I instead go a pre-made route are there any that come more highly recommended as far as quality goes? I'd like something inexpensive but good. I have Amazon Prime for free shipping, though am not opposed to getting from somewhere else if the price is right.

As far as the actual sharpening goes inexpensive is also the word here. Need the best bang for my buck so a higher end system like KME, ETC. is out I don't see being able to justify a couple hundred on a sharpener (though I know it'll eventually pay for itself).

Lansky diamond kit would be best bang for buck. Then kme and then edge pro. I prefer the edge pro because it's more versatile with blade geometry. Kme is great for blade stock that have flat portions to hold the blade. If it's say a full flat grind it will always be uneven on one side. Same with most all other clamp systems.

Also start out sharpening some really cheap $5 knives. A good 5 or 6 to wear in the stones.

Been a long week.

Thanks for the reply Mo. I was looking at the lansky's as well as the worksharp guided perhaps. Just real trigger shy on the higher end systems.
I'll go ahead and put the diamond lansky at he top. Now it doesn't come with a stand right?

Also yeah, I have two cheapo "stainless" knifes around here, sister didn't wnat them anymore and man they're in rough shape they are what I've been using for testing.

Anyone recommend anything for the strops?

i'll recommend the lansky too
I belive you'll need the diamonds for the S35VN, but I dont know that steel.
I've run a basic lansky for several years, and have added the diamond stones, the 'sapphire' stone, and several lansky strops and diamond pastes.

get a sharpie, and a jewelers loupe (i use a 10x), and ask questions if you got em

Get a leather strop or use basswood (variety of other wood is useful too) and some diamond or cbn paste or spray. 1micron would be idea but between 4 and 1 will work fine. Also more than one strop and compound will refine that edge more but isn't really needed if all you want to do is debur.
