Sharpening system

What system (equipment do you recommend for sharpening blades and scissoers 4" and smaller? Down to really small(think surgical instruments).

I'm learning to use benchstones and how to sharpen free hand. The should work for small items but the Spyderco Sharpmaker has worked well for me when sharpening all of my sub- 3 in. knives in the past.
