sharpening system

Mmmmh, that's a new one....I guess the search function isn't working...

If you don't have much to reprofile, the Sharpmaker is probably the easiest and most reliable with great results. For reprofiling, I would throw in a coarse or x-coarse DMT benchstone.

If you want to have some fun, I would recommend learning free hand and a set of two decent medium priced waterstones like a Bester 1000 and a King 6000 or 8000.

Spyderco Sharpmaker is the easiest and fairly effective, BUT the Edge Pro Apex is absolutely the best. It just takes a little longer to set up but does an incredible job and gives you maximum flexibility on various angles for primary and secondary bevels. Its also more expensive.

i know how to do free hand but sometimes i just don't have time. whata bout the new sharp slide thing from CRKT

What he said, edgepro is a nobrainer.

I would say the Spyderco Sharpmaker unless you want to spend some serious bucks and get a belt grinder (and learn how to hold angles). It comes with good instructions and a DVD or Video tape that actually shows you how to use it safely and properly.

The best ways to start is grab all the dull kitchen knives and have at them. Once you get the hang of it go to your own. The "boss" will love you for it! You might even get a nice reward!

Of course once you show her how nice a truly sharp knife is she won't be satisfied with a dull one and you may have created a job for yourself! Heh heh!
