hey guys, sorry I know theres a lot of these..

I've been wondering if theres a system that can take a dull edge up to shaving sharp and polished on a budget.

Tried the whole sand paper mouse pad thing, not for me.

I don't like V sharpeners at all.

Am I doomed to spend $200+? on an edge pro? or is there something else that could get the job done?

It takes hard work and practice.

I wouldn't expect to just do it and be the best at it, it's a process of trial and error. You can't get discouraged too quickly, and trying to find a simple/easy/quick 'system' isn't going to help if you don't understand sharpening.

You can get a knife shaving sharp with a piece of cardboard and a cinder block.

I say just get a set of stones and go at it with a cheap blade. When I first started sharpening my edges would come out worse than I started, they would zig zag from the locations that I took off more on side a in one area and more of side b in the other, but it's a process of understanding your errors and finding a solution to them.

Lansky Deluxe is under $60, though.

Have a good one.

You don't like V edges and convex is not for you...... so how exactly do you plan to sharpen?

If I knew then when I know now, I would have skipped the free hand attempts, the sandpaper, and the Sharpmaker, and gone straight to the Edge Pro.

Now this is just my opinion. I am one of only about 3 people on earth who cannot get a Sharpmaker to produce a sharp knife. I acknowledge that it must be user error. The rest of the world likes it.

But even a dill weed like me can get a crazy sharp edge on an Edge Pro. Its very spendy, but for me it was worth it. JMO.

Pretty sure he means he does not like V sharpeners (i.e. the sort that use a couple rods held in a V formation and the knife is held with the blade plane vertical).

If I am wrong, he is going to need some REALLY small wheels to sharpen concave...hollow ground edge bevel--destined to be all the rage in the future, even more delicate than it is sharp:p

I have two word for you:

Paper Wheels

If you were okay with the abrasives on the sandpaper, how about using plate glass under the paper? Then strop.

Paper wheels are another way to go.

Hi There,

I second the Paper Wheels Learning curve about 15 minuts to get a basic edge.

Electric,
