Sharpening Systems

I am sure this is a tired thread but I thought I would get the latest opinions. I've used a Lansky for a long time but the quality was so so with it and I broke a couple of the plastic section of the stones. I upgraded to the KME but have had challenges with the stones scraping the vise clamp and found it not the best on slip joints. They seem to be too narrow to get the right angle on them. The Spyderco sharpener is fine for touching up but not so much for reprofiling or serious work.

I guess my question is, what's best for traditional slip joints? if the answer is traditional stones, what do you use?

Thanks.

Traditional stones probably are best for reprofiling traditional slip joint knives. I use a guided system but the guides are optional. I used the guides for a couple of sharpening sessions and then I didn't need them anymore.

I pretty much need this system because I always had trouble with tips. The stone mount takes care of that problem for me because it pivots as the blade starts to curve. Works very well. I simply hold the knife at the same angle throughout the process and the pivoting stone takes care of the rest. You can lock the pivot for straight edges or if you just want it locked.

Comes with coarse and fine stones with an optional kit that includes coarser and finer stones and a strop.

Wicked edge has a small blade clamp that positions the blade further from the base thereby increasing clearance (I have the WE but not the adapter).

I just googled for KME and it appears they have similar “KME pen knife pro jaws”

I also use an Edge Pro Pro for the more challenging tasks. Ironically the owner of that company tells the story that many of his customers started with a Lanky and then moved on to his system. I also had a Lansky. There are many options out there today; much more than when I was first looking.

I recently added a Sharpmaker to the sharpening tools and use it for CRK quick touch ups. I was really impressed with how well that works.

I am a big fan of the Spyderco Sharpmaker system. I have been using ceramic bench stones from Spyderco and I think after a couple years of practice (I am a slow learner) I am a bench stone convert.

For a guided system i just got the work sharp professional system. It is great for small blades. It has a magnetic table and a clamp option. I have had lansky and the first worksharp precision adjuat system but on both the clamps were a problem. The magnetic table works pretty well, it does scratch the blades up if you dont tape them. 20241117_112439.jpg20241117_112418.jpg
