Sharpening the 7

My first Becker (BK7) isn't even here yet, but I have a question. How should I go about sharpening it? As of now the only sharpening system I have is a sharpmaker. The sharpmaker allows for 30 or 40 degree angles, but the 7 has a 20 degree angle. So, how should I sharpen it?

As I understand it, the Sharpmaker's angles are 'inclusive'.

So 30 and 40 really mean 15+15 and 20+20, respectively.

So use the 40 for the 7.

Ah ha, that makes sense. Thanks for the info, I am admittedly a sharpening idiot.

I'm pretty certain I would do more harm than good on a flat stone.
uh ... you're talking about a Becker, not a shaving straight razor.

What's that branch going to do to that blade when you cut/chop/baton thru it?

You taking your Sharpmaker into the woods? Whatcha gonna do when it needs sharpening and all you got is river stones?

Learning to 'free hand' has many benefits. ;)

It is definitely a skill I would like to learn, but that being said a sharpmaker is very packable. It could easily be thrown into a pack or cargo pocket. And are you suggesting I shouldn't shave with my Becker? Why'd I buy one then?

Hey WVKnifeguy....

The sharpmaker is a great tool and should do you a great job......if you want to learn how to freehand Watch Jerry Fisk and buy a Norton Fine India Stone which is only about ten bucks on the net and take th crummiest knife you own and practice ...... Cheap lesson that will pay dividends the rest of your life and if you somehow totally screw up you are out a few bucks and you do NOT have to tell anybody....
