Does anyone know the exact angle of the edge grind on the CQC-7? Is it the same on the Mini?

well..its a 45 degree angle....on one side only.....be careful not to mess up the tip..(which I did)

I don't have the CQC-7, but My CQC-10 and Traveler both have an angle of 30 degrees when I use my Lansky sharpener.

Thanks, kritik. I've sent my chisel grind knives to Emerson to be resharpened but it's a pain, and not cheap.

I have a Sharpmaker and have the same question as colubrid...40 degrees makes sense. Does anyone else agree?

tokerblue, 30 degrees is a bit steep for my regular and mini CQC-7 which are EDC knives. I think 40 degrees offers a bit more durability for EDC.

But what happens to the blade when you sharpen a 45 degree on a 40 degree?

The term used is "reprofiling". Sharpening a straight edge is not hard to do, if iqt was a recurve like the commander or even a conexed edge I could see it being an issue. Lay the sharpmaker stones flat on the devide and match the angle. It really does not need to be turned into an overtly complex issue.

well becarefull not to over do it on the stone...thats how I f...up mine....(I messed the v of the tanto):grumpy:

Well, I tried it last night using the grey and white Sharpmaker stones laying flat in the base and it worked pretty well. The edge is sharp and the transition is clean, but I need a bit more practice matching the angle.

Folks.... Emersons come with one edge bevel @ about 30 degrees and the other edge bevel @ 2 or 3 degrees (if that).

If you sharpen the 30 degree bevel on the 40 degree setting on the Sharpmaker, you are just making the shoulder nice and shiny. You're not hitting the edge at all! The Sharpmaker set at 40 degrees per side means you're sharpening the edge if it's 20 degrees or less (40 degrees inclusive). The Emerson is @ 30 degrees. I find it easy to use the Sharpmaker @ 40 degrees, but you have the tilt the blade about 15 degrees so you're actually hitting the edge. Use a Sharpie and you'll see what I mean.

10 times on the 30 degree bevel, and then 1 or 2 times on the other bevel (almost flat on the stone - remember, this bevel almost doesn't exist) to knock the burr off. Repeat until it shaves hair or cuts computer paper cleanly. These things take a nice edge if you're doing it correctly!

Are you sure? I have a Super CQC 7 and it doesn't look like 45, maybe 30...

Also - owning an Emerson is a good excuse to learn how to sharpen freehand! :)

Well, the consensus is 30 degrees! Thank you everyone. I actually went back at it a bit with the fine and very fine stones freehand. The edge is gorgeous and precise, if I do say so myself! I'll post a photo if I can figure it out.
