sharpening the edge of pro flight a good idea?

Hi there!

I've got a set of 12" pro flights. I like the overall feel and quality of the product, and they throw well (as well as I can!).

Being an outdoorsman, I'm tempted to grind and sharpen one of the throwers into a kind of a smatchet-looking camp tool (that I can still throw!), thereby eliminating the need of a small camp axe. The throwers are now cord wrapped with bright colour but I'm also thinking of setting a rubber handle. One simply has to experiment, right?:)

My question is, of course: have you tried this, and does the carbon v hold edge? I'm a fan of carbon steel puukko-knives and I think I know how to take care of the blade once it's done. I quite prefer carbon steel to any space-age super-hard alloys.

I also think I can accomodate my throwing to the somewhat changed balance. Maybe I'll just grind some off the tang as well?

I'm not an expert on this because I've never used the proflight throwers, but carbon V has decent edge retention. You may find that if it is thrown allot the sharper (thinner) edge will wear faster, this is unavoidable for almost any steel that impacts a target like our throwing toys.

I would have to go with 7cain on that.(nice to know that you throw knifes also). Carbon V holds and edge very very well. I was using my brothers srk and used it as an axe andchoped through a piece of 2 by 4 (pine) and it was stile sharper then my benchmade42a out of the box. (in other words shaveing sharp). I have sharpened 2 of my 3 true flight throwes and their edge is still sharp enough to shave paper.:D I love carbon V except that it rust REALLY easily.
