Hey guys. Well today I am asking about how to sharpen a dagger such as the gerber guardian back up. I bought mine used so I don't know if the previous owner modified his but the coating seemed untouched and the blade not even sharpened so I'm doubting it. The reason I mentioned this is because I'm having a heak of a time sharpening it with my wet stones! most knives I own I can get to shave paper in just a few stokes over each stone and razor after some work. Well I've been working on this one and I cant seem to hone it to even shave paper. Ive been patient. It's starting to bother me. What angle should I use? Any other specs on sharpening a dagger? I'm not use to sharpening daggers. (this is my first dagger) Thanks for your time.

It should not be any different to sharpen, you might have gotten a knife with bad heat treatment.

They are very thick and not really ground correctly to take a proper edge as is the case with most dagger type blades. Best I can say is good luck.

I fought the same battle with a backup guardian several years ago. After several hours, it was relagated to throwing at trees while camping. Only knife I ever had a problem sharpening.

It's a dagger. It needs a sharp, strong point. Having razor sharp edges is 'nice,' but a rougher toothed edge does more damage. And 'damage' is what a dagger is for, not camping. It's not for delicate cutting. It's for stabbing. Full force. Use a file on the edges...

That said, I have three Gerber Guardians, and have no difficulty putting cutting edges on them using either an EdgePro or the DMT Aligner. I just don't take them past 400 grit.
