Hi, all.

I've just bought my first SOG; the Government Agent, and I am very, very impressed. It is, as I expected, razor sharp. I guess it will not stay that way forever. I intend to abuse the Govt, and was wondering if any of you knifeoholics out there can recommend any sharpening tools and/or websites that explain how to sharpen your knife correctly.

Thanks in advance and happy new year!

Congratulations on your first SOG, that is a great knife !! Use it well, use it often, use it safely.

I'm not much of a sharpening expert, I just don't have the knack for using stones and ceramic sticks. I need to hang out for awhile with someone who does and learn the how-to's.
There are plenty of sharpening websites, I'll suggest you "search" this website, you'll find many posts that will be very helpful.

What does work quite well for me is a sharpening steel. Time spent using the steel puts on that arm-hair-cutting razor edge.
My technique is to stroke one side of the blade down the steel, then the other side.... and continue alternating like that, one side, then the other.

Again, Congrats on the Government Agent, that is one great knife !!!

Cheers,

Carl

Check out the Lansky sharpening systems. Their are countless numbers of stones including Arkansas style stones and diamond stones which will impress you with their quality and consistancy. The system works great for any types of knives, so you wont be limited to just your Government Agent. They have a special vice system that clamps on to your knife so that the strokes with your stones are perfect every time. An assortment of stones can be purchased that can hone either serreted of plain edge knives to a razor sharp edge. Take a look at their site to see all the systems that they produce. They are a bit expensive but they will pay for themselves over time. Good luck with your Agent, as it is a great knife.

Check out 1SKS or your local knife store for offerings. There are lots of instructions on various web sites. There is a lot of mistique about sharpening. It is actually fairly straight forward.

I am a wood worker, and spend a lot of time sharpening my tools. Shape the edge (yours already is) removing roughness, then polish to get it too the sharpness at a microscopic level.

I use the Spyderco Sharp Maker and a steel burnisher. The triangle shape of the stones work on plain and serrated edges, bringing them to a good edge shape. The burnisher polishes the edge to make it razor sharp.

Good luck.

These are all great suggestions!
I am no sharpening expert either...
Try doing a search for "sharpening" and you'll find MANY threads. Also check out the Forums FAQ section, there's an article on sharpening by Joe Talmadge.

Save your self a lot of time and send it to New pig hunter and let him do it for you !!! , Except don't expect it to come back for a while and when it does, you will have to soak it in joy for a while to get the hot sauce and rib grease off of it. :D
Now for the REAL answer, I could not offer you any better advice than these guys have, except, don't sharpen unless it needs it, and if it does, try a ceramic stick first, to save your blade, sometimes a few strokes of the rod will bring it back to hair poppin sharp. , but if it needs it and a rod won't do it, try all of the above.:D

The Government is a good choice for a start.
In fact you're going to remember how light it felt around your waist years from today.

I am glad that in this day and 'edge', there are still folks who still appreciate a no-frills and practical proven design.

Good luck with the sharpening!

Many thanks for great answers!:) I am extremely happy with the Govt, and I don't expect it to be needing sharpening for quite a while. When the time comes, I'll be ready, thanks to you guys!:D
