anyone got tips for sharpening the patrol machete? in particular id like to know the angle to use and how to shaprpen a blade this long as im more accustomed to smaller blades. any tips you'd like to throw in will be a big help as well. thanks in advance.

Too much work to do by hand.

I use a bench grinder w/ hard fiber wheels, one of which has abrasive, the other rouge. The recurve is a bit tricky. I eyeball the edge angle and try not to steepen the factory edge much.

Belt grinder would be better still, alas not what I have ... yet.

I use a 10" Hewlett Jewelstik 3 sided diamond sharpening rod on my Brute, Machax, and Patrol Machete. Quite effective.

Since Jerry Hossom put a WICKED convex edge on mine, I have only sharpened it on my sharpmaker. I have not chopped into the dirt but the convex edge haz proven VERY durable! He did it on a belt sander . . . started at 600 and worked through several grits up to a green rouge belt. I was VERY blessed to have Jerry do that for me prior to coming to Central America. That is not possible for everyone so what I USED to do was freehand file the edge with a diamond rod and then finish on my sharpmaker. I do the sharpening in two stages. One up through the recurve and then grip the spine of the blade close to the tip to do the belly and tip. Seemed to work pretty well.

After using it for a lot of heavy chopping this past weekend, I just used my Sharpmaker to touch it up. Just a few swipes on each side and it was sharp again. You have to be very very careful that you use the safety guards though, as the blade has a tendency to cut flesh with the slightest bit of pressure.
