Sharpening the Rat

I am considering joining the Rat nation and purchasing a Rodent knife.
At the current time most of my knives are from Benchmade and Spyderco with a couple of Bucks and an RTAK.

I want a series heavy duty fixed blade and am looking at the Bog Dog and Dessert Battle Rat (i.e. getting both although I quite fancy a big Daddy but don't see them on the Rat website!!!!).

My question is how do you lot sharpen these large blades. I tend to use a lansky for smaller blades and have no problems in getting a hair popping edge. However, this is not suitable for larger edges. I assume that I will have to bite the bullet and get an edge pro? How do you guys keep the edge of the rat in top condition?

With a convex edge the best bet is to use sandpaper on a mouse pad :D  :D

I've had pretty good luck with my Howling Rat using a strop and jeweler's rouge. :)

I've really gotta figure out the method you guys are using with a mousepad and sandpaper! If you've got a good link or could cut&paste the info, this might be a good place considering the title of this thread.

Thanks in advance! ;)

What grits of sandpaper do you use?

I use 280 and 400. ;)

I'll throw in here that I prefer a rubber sanding block (like you can get at Walmart) to a mousepad, as it doesn't give so much. If you use a mousepad, don't push down too much or you'll end up rounding your edge off eventually.

Oh by the way, the Bog Dog isn't made anymore. All of the D2 models have been discontinued from standard production. :(

I just got my "Forum Market" Bog Dog yesterday. To quote a PM I sent to a friend:

I got my Nw/oB (New without Box) Bog Dog today!! It was MUCH, MUCH better than I expected! It's actually much larger than I thought it would be - a lot more similiar to my Desert Jack (a VERY good thing!) than I expected!

I'll post pics. I can't quite bring myself to abuse the Desert Jack. I'm sorta waiting for a Satin Rat to become the user. However, I see myself using the Bog Dog (D2) a lot!!

I LOVE this thing!

Good for you--starting out in the Swamp the right way: fellow Swampers envious of you. ;) Never turn that little guy loose because they're hard as hell to get ahold of.

Aw, thanks CDyer. Now is that a desert 'coot or an INFIcoot I see as your avatar?? Another rare one, eh?

:D
