Sharpening the SAR 3 or INFI blades.

I received the SAR 3 two weeks ago. I sliced paper all week and did some wittling yesterday with it.

Any recommendations on how to keep the blade sharp? I have the Spyderco sharpmaker, where I already put in a couple of strokes on the ceramic sticks. The Busse page said stropping is all the INFI blade requires.

On another note, I also received a Mountaineer 1, A2 steel. I found it to be much sharper than the SAR 3 when I received both.

I don't want to take anymore steel off the INFI than is necessary.

Once I get them sharp as I want on my Edge Pro I just use the ceramic rod that came with my Edge Pro to touch them up when needed.

You can do the same with the Sharpmaker fine or Ultra Fine rods.

I use a slack grinder belt, a leather strop and a ceramic rod:thumbup:

The sharpmaker never seems to match the existing grind and you may have to take off a lot of material to get it to work right...

Well the SAR 3 is a convex blade, so using sandpaper and a strop is a good choice, that's what I use, along with an ultra fine stone to finish her up.

I brought mine back to razor sharp after a hard use camping trip with just a strop and some diamond paste.

Ankerson: Jim's Knife Test and Review Videos: Spyderco Mule CPM S35VN Steel Cutting Test - Cardboard. That is one sharp blade!!!

My SAR 3 was not even cutting close to that from the factory. I'll do some serious stropping and a few strokes on the finer ceramic stones.
Thanks.

I know stones are supposed to be a no-no for a convex edge, but I've waved my SAR-3 on a diamond stones a few times at the perfect angle as well. Combined with a strop, now its a light saber.

I also have found that using a strop with green compound keeps my infi shaving sharp. Even after chopping hardwood, I run it on my strop 10-20 times a side and the edge is back to factory swine shaving sharpness. Good luck.

Convex edges are easiest to keep sharp with stropping. For me anyway. That little blade should be pretty easy to get up to shaving sharp with some gentle work.
