Sharpening the swedge, the most efficient method?

Hi,

I just picked up a Ka-Bar USMC and it's amazing knife. Unfortunately, they ship it with the swedge unsharpened, probably for legal reasons in certain states and/or cities. Does anyone have suggestions on the best method of sharpening the back swedge? or is it required to head to a machine shop with a grinder? I started with my Sharpmaker, however it appears this will take quite some time and probably grind my coarse stones down in the process. I have heard of people using Dremmel sand bits.

You could use some rough grit sandpaper on a strop, but this would still take longer than a grinder and might make for a convex grind. Ultimately, whatever you decide just be careful who you let grind on your knife so the heat treat stays intact.

If I were you, and I'm thinking of having it done too, I would send it to RichardJ. Hell get it razor sharp and doesn't charge much for it. I'll be sending him mine along with a few others very soon.

when i did the swedge on mine i ended up using the diamond file on my leatherman wave. basically what you need is a very very course diamond stone and patience because it will take a good couple hours
 
I used a half round file and a soft Arkansas slipstone on mine.The knife was a gift from Moosez45 and he made the futuristic kydex for it also.Works great lashed on a packstrap handle down.
