I don't know if anyone thinks this is practical or if anyone else does this, but I use a microscope when I sharpen my knives. It really helps you to see inperfections, and where the blade is not quite as sharp in some areas. Let me know what you think.

I never thought of that (like me not thinking is a surprise

). I don't sit down and sharpen my knives, I just use the sharpeners that come with a kitchen knife set (ceramic "sticks", I don't know what they are called

).

Sounds good though, especially since you can get the whole blade and not have dull spots and sharp spots.

If you've got a microscope, then that's great. I just use a little 8x jewler's loup thing that I got for free with an order from Edmond Scientific. I think it's less than $10 if you buy it. But, about five or ten times magnification really does help and really does give you real feedback on your technique.

I use a Gatco Edgemate sharpening system. I won't say that it's the greatest shapening system out there since it's the only one I've extensively used. But, I will say that I get very impressive results with my Gatco.

That is about what I use, a ten power microscope, and a Spyderco sharpmaker. Mabe the microscope is a little overkill, but oh well.
