What does everybody use to sharpen knives. I have never shaprened a knife before and don't really want a complex system. Something simple, yet effective.

I use the spyderco sharpmaker. It is simple, easy, compact and it works.

Simple yet effective = Spyderco Sharpmaker :)

Pair it with a Fallkniven DC4 and you're covered :) (You will have to learn to sharpen freehand for this though).

Spyderco SharpMaker and when you get more skilled, Spyderco Pro-Filer Set, DMT Folding Hones and EZE Lap Diamond Rods.

I use to use a small pocket sharpener that I got for around 15 bucks, it worked fine but I wasn't really getting the results I wanted so I ended up buying a spyderco sharpmaker. The sharpmaker comes with a very informative and helpful DVD, and with the fine rods I managed to get a Swiss army classic knife to shaving sharp in less than half an hour.

I use a falkniven DC4. It has fine diamond on one side and extra fine ceramic on the other. Then I use a loaded strop to finish up.

+1 to DMT dia-fold.

Being able to hold the sharpening tool will help you learn faster. You will be able to "feel" the edge.

Do yourself a favor and learn how to freehand sharpen. Many people here, myself included, would be more than happy to help you out.

What works for me is the Lansky diamond system. Then I use the Sharpmaker for touchups. I had hoped to get better results with my sharpmaker but have been unable to up to this point. I figure its got to be my faulty technique as many other folks swear by them.

free hand on a stone for most of the time

touch ups i do on my small ceramic rod that goes on the keychain

reprofiling efforts go to my lansky system, it takes a little while for me but i can get crazy sharp on it

Even after all this i still think about getting the paper system sold by many online stores. They take a while to learn but once you do they can get knives redonkelous sharp in a small amount of time. Besides, once you get addicted to sharpening you can make some money by sharpening out your neighbors kitchen knives.

Used to do freehand with a DMT hone, arkansas stone and a chunk of leather for a strop. (still what i carry when i leave home)

I use my sharpmaker around the house though. You can learn to freehand using the spyderco rods if you wanted, you can get some really good results.

any linkage to a good tutorial for free hand sharpening?

i have a sharpmaker that my uncle gay to my parents and they never used it even once so eventually i just kinda grabbed it but the DVD is lost to the ages so a tutaorial on that would be nice as well.
